Because any closet purge is an adventure ;) That's actually where my adventure hat lives and as a result became part of these photographs.

Summer is HERE. It's hot. Sweaters will not be part of the near future. A lovely opportunity to visit your closet, take a look around and say goodbye to items you no longer wear, use or need. I try to do this each season and always feel refreshed once the boxes are full for someone else to enjoy my lightly used clothing and shoes. My younger sister receives most of my clothing during these giveaway moments. She's never been big on shopping for herself, probably because she has an older sister who gives her nice clothes {some with tags still on them} every three months :)

I must admit, it's a much more fun process when you know someone else is going to enjoy items you no longer love for yourself. Everything else gets placed in a box for donating to a charity. Some items go straight to this area if I know it will not fit my sister well {our bodies are slightly different, although the same size} or falls outside my sister's style preference.

My Closet Reality

There is no walk-in closet in my life at the moment. I have six feet of prime closet real estate. Not much compared to past homes. But plenty for my current clothing needs. Unless my hangers are dysfunctional, no more are to be purchased while using this six foot closet. My current collection stores the perfect amount of clothing, without everything squishing together and getting wrinkled. If new clothes are desired for said closet, old clothes must go.

I own too much clothing. This is, thankfully, becoming less true after the last two years of giving away large amounts of clothing and shoes {and keeping the next point in mind while shopping}. My day-to-day wardrobe consists of jeans {sometimes shorts}, cute tops, open cardigans {no buttons, please}, yoga clothing, outerwear gear and the occasional dress/skirt.

Anything outside of this is wasteful and should not be bought or kept.

Closet Purge Rules

Know what you wear and how often you wear it. If a season has come and gone, and that sweater is still living only on a hanger, maybe it is time to part ways. Even if you only wore it a few times.

Are there colors you LOVE and have a tendency to wear most of the time? For me, I have found cool colors are my preferred palette along with gray and black. Anything outside of this has a tendency to never make it onto my body. Get rid of colors you know you will not wear.

Bodies change. Clothing fits differently over time. Sometimes skin suddenly hates wool {goodbye all wool sweaters}. Keep this in mind while sifting through your hangers.

Try clothes on! If there's something you forgot you owned or have not worn in forever, put it on your body. What do you think? For me, 50% of the items I tried on ended up in a box. Why? Because my style sense/preference has changed some. My hips continue to expand a tiny bit every year and some things fit differently now. High heels hate me and I hate them. And so on.

Whoops! I have two of the same shirt {this happened twice}. Do you need two of the same thing? If they are the holy grail jeans, then yes. If it is a sweater, my answer is no. I give the NEW one with a tag still on it to my sister or charity.

Sometimes, clothing ages. And not just in a style sense. Decide if it is worth repairing to keep in your closet or consider re-purposing for another use {outside your closet}.

Repeat and Be Happy

I always make two or three passes when purging my closet, keeping the same ideas in mind. There are currently 36 hangers on standby, should I wish to use them. For now, I'm enjoying my less crowded closet and new finds for the upcoming season.
